Jon Evans

Biography / CV of Jon Evans

Jon Evans was born in South Wales in 1969. After an unsettled upbringing with many new starts and as many endings, Jon found art as an ?expression for depression?.

He went on to produce a set of drawings which he wrote of in poetic form. Jon has exhibited these works in Wales, and also displays them as a stage act - ?A bardic Initiation?, where you are taken on an inner journey in true bardic style.

This journey led Jon to nature and the world of myth and magic which is his biggest inspiration. Jon now lives in Mid Wales and works mostly in wood and stone using traditional methods and an uncanny ?eye for sight?.

Jon retains his early works for exhibiting and produces new art and commissions at his ?Peace of Mined? slate carving workshop at Aberllefenni slate quarry.

Recent commissions include a set of slate carvings for the Centre for Alternative Technology visitor centre in Mid Wales and the creation of a ?Dragon Wall? which was highly praised on Channel 4 Television?s ?The Landscape Man?

Reviews of work by Jon Evans

Review from Rodney Matthews, 2010

"I first became aware of the slate and wood carvings, and the drawings of Jon Evans, at The Festival In The Shire, (A J.R.R. Tolkien related event) in Mid Wales. From the outset, I could see that here was a dedicated craftsman, completely focused on his art, and versatile in his application."

"His exhibition held a number of innovative carvings in a celtic style, but what really took my eye was his natural wood `sculptures`, made from driftwood and tree roots from a time-worn oak. Even the selections of these raw materials indicated a discerning eye."

Comments from Matthew Wilson on Channel 4`s The Landsape Man (regarding Jon`s "Dragon Wall")

"Beautiful, subtle, a work of art"

"The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful."
